Genesis 19

Genesis 19 – Sodom and Gomorrah

Lot is sitting at the gate of Sodom, sees the two ‘angels’ coming and bows to meet them. He urges and rushes them into his house to stay all night and leave early in the morning, obviously he knows this is a bad neighborhood and these two shouldn’t be here.

Do we know what angels look like? Did Lot know these two were angels or was he just seeing nice individuals that he knew would be taken advantage of in the town?

‘Before they lay down’ the men of Sodom came to Lot’s house and asked who the men where and told him to bring them out so they may know them. I’m unclear if this is the biblical “know” or if they just wanted to see who the guys were.

But before Lot gives the guys up he offers his two virgin daughters who ‘have not known man.’ This does give a bit to the anti-homosexual view of Sodom and Gomorrah but there are other references to the sins that don’t include homosexuality.

Amazingly he asks the mob to allow him to bring out his daughters and allow them to ‘do ye to them as is good in your eyes.’

In v9 the mob tells Lot they will do worse to him than they wanted to do the visitors so I would doubt they meant to rape the visitors only to rough them up.

The mob goes to attack but the visitor angels pull Lot into the house and blind the ones in front. The angels ask Lot to take everyone of his (family and slaves no doubt) and leave the city because ‘the lord hath sent us to destroy it.’

What happened to Abraham’s deal with god about saving the city if ten righteous were found? ( Gen. 18:32)

When, in v14, Lot goes to get his sons-in-law to get up and get out, they think he is playing and do not leave. The next morning the angels took Lot, his wife, and his two daughters outside of the city…they only had to look for 6 righteous people.

The angels say ‘escape for thy life, look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain, escape to the mountain.’ Lot says they can’t go that far but would like to go to a small city called Zoar, the angels agree and in v24 finally ‘the lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the lord out of heaven.’

Lot’s wife did not listen well to their instructions and looked back as the destruction took place, she was turned into a pillar of salt for viewing the power of god and destruction of the city. Why is god hiding his doings if they are not just?

v29 basically is saying that Lot is only saved because of Abraham, but Abraham also asked of any righteous in the city to be saved not just his family.

Lot feared staying so close to the destruction and so he and his daughters left Zoar for the mountains that the angels had told them to go to in the first place.

An unknown amount of time passes in the cave but eventually the daughters agree to make their father drink wine and have sex to conceive children with him.

He must have been pretty drunk to not know that she laid down or got back up, but science tells us that alcohol can actually inhibit the system that leads to conception.

v36, ‘both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.’ They both conceived children from raping their own father.

Why would god have saved this family if they were just as bad as the people from Sodom and Gomorrah that caused the destruction? Did he not foresee their incestuous relationship? Did he not see it while they were planning and then doing it?
