Genesis 18 – Abraham v. God
Does god have a corporeal body?
Three men came to Abraham and he brings out the best of his food for them.
God again tells Abraham that Sarah will conceive a son. Even though, v11, they are so old, and ‘it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.’ She’s already gone through menopause so Sarah laughed at the thought of her having a child.
God asks Abraham why she laughed thinking she was too old saying ‘is anything too hard for the lord?’ Sarah then tried to deny laughing at god
He doesn’t actually tell them when she will have a son but says he will return sometime in the next year.
As the two men and god get up to leave he says, in v17, ‘shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?’
I’m sure we all know what is fixing to happen, why does god seem like he’s embarrassed by whats going to happen?
He basically says Abraham is going to be a mighty ruler of nations someday and doesn’t want him to know of the bad things god does.
v21, god says he is going to go to Sodom and Gomorrah to see if the cries ‘which is come unto me’ are true or not. Can’t god see and know everything? Why must he go into the city to know these things?
Ever heard of the word Peradventure….basically means WHAT IF.
Abraham asks the best question here, ‘Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?’ And then he follows with ‘Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?’
God responds seemingly sarcastically and not actually to Abraham’s questions. He says ‘if I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.’
Obviously this is not what Abraham was asking be done, he only wanted the righteous to be saved from the disaster whatever number of them there may be, even if only one existed why must he be destroyed with the wicked.
Abraham changes the question to what if of the fifty you lacked five, would you destroy the fortyfive for lack of five more? And then forty? And thirty? Twenty?
‘Oh let not the lord be angry’ but what about just 10? God says ok, ‘I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.’
Abraham has just talked god down from killing everyone in the cities no matter what to saving it if there exist a mere ten righteous people in the entire city. Wonder what he could do at a yard sale.
Does god not know what is going on in the city? Does he not know how many righteous people exist therein? Does he even think about the children in the city? What then is the age where you can be considered righteous or evil?
v33, god goes along toward Sodom and Gamorrah and Abraham returns to his tent.
